Seborrheic dermatitis is a non-contagious skin condition that causes scaly patches of skin with oily, dandruff-like flakes. It usually appears on the face, scalp, and body folds. It can also cause red, itchy skin on the upper back or nose.
Seborrheic dermatitis is also called dandruff, seborrheic eczema, and seborrheic psoriasis. When it occurs in infants, it's called cradle cap.
The condition is likely caused by an overgrowth of Malassezia yeast, which triggers inflammation. This yeast is normally found in the skin.
Treatments include:
- Creams, lotions, shampoos, or ointments that control inflammation.
- Corticosteroids, such as hydrocortisone, fluocinolone, clobetasol, and desonide.
- Medicated shampoo or other products long term to clear up symptoms and prevent flare-ups.
